Effective therapeutic communication requires the delivery of a clear message to the patient. However, many communication barriers can cause misunderstanding and misinterpretation of your message. Honestly evaluate your personal biases. What do you find unacceptable in people? Do you prejudge an individual based on his or her affiliation with a particular group or because of a certain lifestyle decision? Do these biases create barriers to the development of therapeutic relationships? If so, how can you get beyond these barriers?

  • avoid use of jargon
  • check that you and the patient have understood each other by asking questions .
  • give them a firm explanation of why their behaviour is unacceptable .
