How is lactate generated? What is the role of NADH + H+ in the production of lactate?
How is lactate used?
Define the following terms: glycolysis, glycogenolysis, glycogenesis, gluconeogenesis.
What is beta oxidation?
What role does beta oxidation play during exercise?
Answer:
When oxygen is available, cellular respiration takes place by reaction of glucose. However, when oxygen is scarce or absent, alternative mechanism is activated which converts the three carbon pyruvate molecule to lactic acid. NADH plays the role of an oxidizing agent and H+ from NADH escapes to form NAD+.
Lactate is used during strenuous exercise, when there is shortage of oxygen. However, excess of lactic acid may not be good, like in the case of cramps result due to excess lactic acid production.
Glycolysis - Metabolic process in which glucose is converted to pyruvic acid.
Glycogenolysus - Metabolic process in which Glycogen(n) is converted to glucose-6-phosphate and glycogen. (n-1)
Glycogenesis - Metabolic process in which Production of glycogen is obtained from glucose.
Glyconeogenesis - Metabolic process in which Glucose is produced from non-carbohydrate sources, such lactate.
