When many Latin American countries gained independence, most of them tried to set up republics and got rid of the monarchies. They also ended slavery which was a big part in their labor. The countries also had to somehow become part of the world economy which was ruled by the Europeans. The Latin American countries’ development was hindered because their economies heavily relied on the world trade network. The colonial caste system stuck in the colonies though. The Native Americans remained at the bottom of the social structure along with the Blacks. The people at the bottom of the caste system were treated poorly and discriminated by others who were higher up. Many rebellions were started because of this poor treatment. The Latin American nations remained independent from Western rule at the end of the 19th century and did not supply West with supplies or troops for their wars. All the profits from supplies created in Latin American nations were given to the government instead of being taken by European merchants. Like the true colonies the Latin American nations were dependent on the West for economic growth. The West was the number one consumer of products and raw materials exported out of the Latin American nations.
The United States entered the political and social affairs of Latin America during the annexation of Texas. After Texas gained independence from Mexico, they joined the United States and this angered the Mexicans and eventually war broke out between the two countries. The United States won the war and tơk even more land from Latin America. After the American Civil War, the United States became a majof consumer of the products created in Latin America. The countries reluctant to negotiate with the United States were better off than the ones who rejected the United States.
