calculate the percentage by mass of oxygen in the following compounds. C17H19NO3

Solutions

Expert Solution

We know the atomic masses are as, C=12, H=1, N=14, O=16, from this let’s calculate the molecular mass.

Molecular mass of C17H19NO3 = (17 x at. mass of C) + (19 x at. mass of H) + (1 x at. mass of N) + (3 x at. mass of O)

= (17 x 12) + (19 x1) + (1 x 14) + (3 x 16)

= 204 + 19 + 14 + 48

=285

Molecular mass of C17H19NO3 = 285

Now, % mass of Oxygen is calculated by formula,

% mass of O = (total mass of 3 O atoms/ Molecular mass) x (100)

                      = [(3 x 16) / 285] x 100

                      = (48/285) x 100

                      =16.84 %

Hence % by mass of O in given compound is 16.84.
