Option 2 – the Bad Newsletter

Background

Jennifer Guyan has applied to your company in the position of a salesperson. However, you have decided to offer the position to another candidate who has more experience selling your company’s products. Jennifer is your Marketing Manager’s niece, so it is very important that you give Jennifer some feedback on why she was not chosen for the position (she needs more experience with selling your particular products and would also benefit from a training program offered by your head office). While you want to give her constructive feedback in the letter, it’s also a good idea to invite her to meet with you in person if she wants further advice in applying for future openings in the company. Write the letter to Jennifer remembering to use the indirect format for bad news communication.

Your Assignment

Write a properly formatted business letter to Jennifer explaining that she did not receive the position she applied for and explaining why.

Make up any details you need. You can create a company name and letterhead for this assignment.

ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES

§ Each letter should be no more than one page in length, 250 words and all fit on one page.

§ Submit assignment via Moodle in a WORD format

§ Present the letter in an appropriate letter format.

§ Counts towards 10% of your total mark.

Sub: Your application for the position of a salesperson in our company

Dear Ms. Guyan,

At the very outset we would like to thank you for applying for the position of a salesperson in our company.

We have carefully reviewed your profile and after much consideration we have decided not to select you for this role at this point in time. We would like to mention that we need a person who has considerable experience in selling our company’s product and given the fact that you do not have such an experience did not qualify you for this role.

I would like to mention that we were indeed impressed with your profile and your credentials and we think that you have a lot of potential and promise in this field. My advice to you would be to gain some experience in this field and this will do well to your career prospects. I would also like to point out that our company’s head office provides a training program for talented individuals like you and you can certainly consider joining that training program to add to your skill sets and gain some added knowledge about this field.

Please feel free to visit me in my office and I will be happy to guide you with regards to your future and how can you apply to our company in the future.

Wishing you all the best for your future.

Best Regards,

John Trump
