- At a local hospital, a decision was made to downsize the nursing staff. The local television station sent a reporter and camera crew to interview the administrator regarding the impact of this action on patient care. After 20 minutes of filming the interview, the reporter left. Later that evening, the CEO received a call from the hospital’s public relations director, who directed her to YouTube. A video had been posted showing several nurses and former patients protesting the hospital’s decision in front of the hospital. The public relations director also directed the CEO to a new community blog called “SaveOurLovingNurses.com.” The CEO called a meeting for the next morning and wondered, “How did things get so out of control?” She asked the public relations director to provide an overview and present a brief plan.

Present the overview and plan.

Solutions

Expert Solution

overview

*inform the ceo about the interview given by the administrator to the local new station.

*read through the blog, understand the intesity of online protests and inform the ceo

*also brief the ceo whether any high level tension is present between nurses and management of the hospital

*analyse whether the protest is affecting the functioning of the hospital, ie. whether the nurses have stopped working by calling on a strike, thus restrainig from their duties

*hear the nusres point of view, what they have to say about the downsizing. enlighten the ceo about their problems

plan

*assess the financial status of the hospital management. come to a conclusion whether downsizing is really necessary.

*if downsizing required, evaluate whether it will affect the functioning of hospital due to reduced staff

if its affects the functioing make an offer to the nurses by reducing their salary thereby continuing their jobs with a decreased salary.

*give nurses atleast one month time before terminating from their job so that they could find job offers at other places,

*address the nurse about the financial crisis faced by the managment of hospital, offer temporary shift for the nurses  who are getting terminated [only if it could be afforded by the hosp]

*check for new investors who could invest in the hospital if the ceo is comfortable with the idea
