Case Study 2
Patty is an informatics nurse specialist hired by a hospital to coordinate the informatics department. Patty represented the nursing perspective on a team organized to identify which documentation system to purchase. One of the first issues Patty identified was the use of NANDA classification systems by the nurses and NIC-NOC by the proposed computer system.
1. Why would two different nomenclature systems present a
problem for documentation?
2. Based on what you have learned about nursing classification
systems, what is the benefit of using only one nursing language in
a hospital? It also reduces potential documentation errors and
confusion when providing hands-off communication to staff
3. Patty identified the need for a computerized patient record
(electronic medical record) to the hospital administration. She
defined the system as allowing consistency in documenting patient
care. Explain how her definition of the computerized patient record
is oversimplified.
4. The team selected a program that allows for the input of
patient data through mobile devices, which would then be downloaded
into the computerized charting system. What are the implications
for educating users and for the Information Services department in
regard to the security of patient information?
5. Patty needs to determine the nursing computer competencies
necessary to use the technology appropriately. What knowledge and
skills are required for nurses to use the computers
effectively?
6. What other types of roles and settings is Patty educationally
and experientially prepared for as an INS (Informatics Nurse
Specialist)?
1,NANDA classification systems and NIC-NOC by the proposed computer system nomenclatures are combinational, taxonomic vocabularies structures organised around polyhierarchies or axes (eg.SNOMED international). Terms may be combined into more complex terms using an informal semantic grammar, but explicit rules for canonical representation of terms are lacking..
2,There are various classification systems used to code and catagorize the patient information for reimbursement purposes..using one classification system may prevent harm and provide safety events.. clarity and uniformity will aid in better identification of contributing factors and ultimately,to a greater level of prevention..
3, EHR can improve the ability to diagnose disease and reduce even prevent medical errors, improving patient outcomes..it reduces errors, improve patient safety and support better patient outcomes..
4, There are many aspects of security for technology.. security professionals balance their security program with physical, technical and administrative security controls along with an ever - present eye on the security landscape to observe breaches experienced by others and enact further controls the risk of the same breach occuring in their facilities.. medical subject testing automatically associated this term with cyber security, computer worms, data protection, data compromising, information protection, computer viruses, computer hacker and data security..
