The mass ratio of sodium to flourine in sodium flouride is 1:21:1. A sample of sodium flouride produced 34.5g of sodium upon decomposition. How much flourine in grams was formed?
Sodium Flouride has a formula of NaF (1 sodium atom, MW=23 g/mol and 1 Fluorine atom, MW=19 g/mol). This means that every 23 g of sodium are combined with 19 g of fluorine. The relation of weight is 1.21:1 (there must be a mistake with the first colon, which should be a point). To solve the problem you use the mass ratio like this:
Another way to do it is with the relation of atomic weights, which will be in the same proportion. With a rule of three you will say:
23 g of sodium combines with 19 g of fluorine
34.5 g of sodium would be combined with X
