What advice would you give to a senior that wants your help with learning how to snack healthier?
Answer:-
Seniors needs change into their snack to make it healthier by improving its nutritional value as per their age and we can help them with good advices.
The amount of snack with good combinations of all needed nutritional sources between right amount of calories is most advisory for seniors. Preliminary we have to make them sure that they are eating a variety of snack foods to get all the nutrients they need that include : protein sources such as beans, eggs ; vitamins and minerals sources such fruits and vegetables; carbohydrates such as whole grains and low fat dairy products or their alternatives. We should advice our seniors to choose their snacks which are rich in fiber content and low in salt.
Seniors can easily have osteoporosis, if they are not getting enough calcium in their diet which can also contribute to anxiety, depression, and sleep difficulties. Therefore they should go for snacks that are high in calcium as well as vitamins specially vitamin D leafy green vegetables and dairy products; as it’s an important need as per their age. So they should have more. Fresh fruits and vegetables are good choices for healthy snacks. They are full of vitamins and low in calories and fat. Some crackers and cheeses also make snacks tastier and healthier. For example having apple and string cheese, whole wheat crackers with peanut butter, carrots and hummus, or plain yogurt and fresh fruit.
Seniors may develop some chronic diseases as they age that can impact their health and how and what they eat. Therefore they have to restrict themselves with their snack intake based on a particular disease, like cardiovascular diseases or diabetes. Some snacks should be tailored to their needs if they are going under certain medical condition such as diabetes or trouble chewing, so be aware of any chronic condition they may have. In such cases they should avoid snacks that are high in salt, sugar, fat or excess calories. They can use naturally sweetened products if they like as they are better than foods and drinks that contain added sugar.
