Ethical case study: You are caring for a terminally ill six-year old, Joey. Joey can no longer leave bed, requires a feeding tube, is on continuous supplemental oxygen and is chronically short of breath, and requires narcotics for pain control. Joey has expressed that he want to go and be with Grandpa and with God because he doesnt want to hurt anymore. His parents insists that everything continues to be done for Joey despite his wishes. What are the ethical issues involved in this dilemma? How can you help the family? What are your obligations to the parentsand to Joey?
* Joey is a terminally ill client so must give consideration to his needs. in this case autonomy is the
ethical principle parents need to follow .
Responsibilities of parents in this condition are
* Respect rights of joey and take decisions after discussion with him ,he need to
spend his rest of life in his home with parents and grandpa so make arrangement like portable oxygen
cylinder,education about feeding through ryles tube and arrange a home nurse for giving pain medicine.
* Spend more time with him which help to reduce anxiety,listen what he says and
maintain good communication.
