Solutions

Expert Solution

Proton is moving from negative plate to positive plate. so, electric force on the proton is equal to the force on the proton. so,

            Eq = ma

acceleration of the proton is ,

             a = E q / m

                  = ( 9.9*10^ 5 N /C ) ( 1.6*10^ -19 C ) / ( 1.67*10 ^ -27 kg )

                   = 9.48*10^ 13 m/s^2

from kinematic equation of motion, vertical distance travelled by the proton is,

         y = ( 1/ 2) a t ^2

time taken by the proton to travel a distance between the plates is ,

             t = sqrt ( 2 h / a )

                = sqrt ( 2 (2*10^ -3 mm ) / ( 9.48*10^ 13 m/s^2 )

                = 6,49*10^- 9 s

Speed of proton is

           v = d / t

              = ( 2.0*10^ -3 m ) / ( 6.49*10^ -9 s)

              = 3.0*10^ 5 m/s
