Please view the you-tube videos on Week 2 moodle page-they cover various topics about nursing and can be included in this discussion board. Some include some television show clips that have nurses and also interviews with people on the street about what nursing is. Hopefully this will give you all a better picture of how the public views nursing. There is also a video about the struggles of minority students and nursing. My hope, is that by the end of this course you will be a strong voice for nursing, with the goal of sharing who nurses are, and why we do what we do! The questions below are discussion starters and you do not have to answer all of them-choose what interests you to discuss! Remember, your initial post can be 300-500 words, basically about 1-2 paragraphs. What do you think nursing is? What has most influenced how you see nursing? How do you react to shows that have nurses on them? How do you think this can affect the view of nursing that the general public will have? Have you had family or friends question why you would want to become a nurse? Have you had someone tell you to become a doctor instead? What can we as nurses and nursing students do to positively or negatively affect the image of nursing? This is more of a "personal" discussion and I do not expect you to bring in resources, unless you want to. If you have not already done so, please review the rubric for discussion posts-they need to be "substantial"- have depth and your answers need to be substantial and carry forward the conversation.

3. Dr. B, a psychiatrist in private practice, is approached by a pharmaceutical company to assist with a clinical trial to test the efficacy of a new drug in the treatment of acute psychosis. The study will enroll acutely psychotic patients with no history of psychosis (or of treatment with antipsychotic drugs) through physicians’ offices and emergency departments. Patients enrolled in the study will be randomly assigned to receive the new medication or a placebo and will remain in hospital for eight weeks. During this time, they will not be permitted to receive antipsychotic medications other than the study drug. Informed consent will be obtained from each participant or a proxy. Patients may be withdrawn from the study if their medical condition worsens substantially.

There are many tools available to assist you as an RN to organize your thoughts, make nursing judgments, and implement the 5 rights of delegation. SBAR – Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation, is a standardized tool used in many institutions that provides a framework to facilitate clear communication between health care providers.
The components of SBAR are as follows, according to the Joint Commission:
Read the following patient care scenario.
Mrs. Evans is an 86-year-old female that has been assigned to your team. She was admitted to the hospital four days ago with pneumonia. Mrs. Evans was placed on IV antibiotics and cough suppressants and her condition improved. The night RN reports that now Mrs. Evans has an increased cough. Her temperature at 6:00 am was 100.4 degrees F, her heart rate was 98 beats per minute, her BP was 98/50 mmHg, and her respiratory rate was 22 breaths per minute. You are working with the Assistive Personnel (AP) Eric, today. You will be delegating the task of obtaining Mrs. Evan's vital signs every 2 hours instead of the routine every 4-hour schedule to Eric.
Develop an SBAR to address delegating to the Assistive Personnel.
Under the column, RN statement, identify what you will say to the AP for each step of the SBAR. In the next column, Five Rights of Delegation/Explanation, identify which of the five rights of delegation your statement addresses and provide a brief explanation for your answer.
