The density of NaCl (an fcc crystal) is 2.16 g/cm3. Find the distance that ions are from their nearest neighbors.

Solutions

Expert Solution

We know density , d = (Z x atomic mass) / ( No x a3 x 10-30 cm3 )

Where Z = No . of atoms in a unit cell = 4                                     Since it is a fcc structure

           atomic mass of NaCl = 23+35.5 = 58.5

           No = avagadro number = 6.023x1023

           a = edge length = in pm

            d = density = 2.16 g/cm3

PLug the values we get

( No x a3 x 10-30 cm3 ) = (Z x atomic mass) / d

                                 = (4x58.5 )/ 2.16

                                 = 108.3

                          a3 = 179.87x106

                          a = 564.5 pm

Therefore the distance that ions are from their nearest neighbors is 564.5 pm

The density of a 10 kg cube of silver is 10.5 g/cm3. What would the density of a 5 kg cube of silver be? I thought the answer would be 5.25 g/cm^3 because m1/m2=p1/p2 so 10kg/5kg=10.5 g/cm^3/ x and you solve for x. But this is coming up as wrong and I don't know why, do i need to convert the kg to g???
