What is the pH of a solution of 0.20 M HNO2?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution :-

Lets make the ICE table for the following reaction equation.

HNO2   + H2O   ----------- > H3O^+   + NO2^-

0.20                                   0             0

-x                                      +x          +x

0.20-x                                x             x

ka = [H3O+][NO2^-]/[HNO2]

7.1*10^-4 = [x][x]/[0.20-x]

7.1*10^-4 * 0.20 -x = x^2

solving for x we get

[H3O+] = x= 0.01157

therefore

pH = -log [H3O+]

pH= - log [0.01157]

pH= 1.94

Therefore the pH of the solution = 1.94
