Optical fibers use reflection to guide light through a channel.
Explain, in your own words, how optical fibers are made in order
for the light to be reflected off the cladding instead of refracted
into it?
Explain in your own words why light is trapped in an optical
fiber.
Describe at least two cases where you have observed the effects
of light refraction besides the case of a swimming pool. Use
examples from your own life.
Why the fabrication of optical fiber is a very delicate
process?
What do you understand is the "Dispersion" effect in
communication fibers

Optical fibers are
made from glass or plastic and generally have an index of
refraction of about 1.45. They are commonly used in
telecommunications and computer networks.
Identify and describe
a specific application for fiber optics? What kind of information
can they transmit? What advantages do they have over other
materials or technologies? Explain how optical fibers work and the
role of total internal reflection of light within.
1. What is total internal reflection and why is it important in
optical fibers? What is the critical angle?
2. Does a diverging lens have a focus point?
3. What type of lens, diverging or converging, would you use for
a magnifying glass? Explain.
Total internal reflection is behind the ability of optical
fibers to send signals over great distances. The are typically
formed by a core material of higher index than the "cladding"
material that surrounds the core. For an optical fiber with a core
index of 1.58 and a cladding index of 1.53. For a ray travelling
along the core, what is the minimum angle (in
degrees) of incidence against the cladding needed
to keep the light in the fiber? 75.55
