For a bronze alloy, the stress at which plastic deformation begins is 300 MPa and the modulus of elasticity is 115 GPa.

What is the maximum load (in kN) that may be applied to a specimen having a cross-sectional area of 70 mm2 without plastic deformation?

And if the original specimen length is 100 mm, what is the maximum length (in mm) to which it may be stretched without causing plastic deformation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

In a specimen under tensile testing, the plastic deformation starts at the yield point. When stress in the specimen is equal to the yield strength of the material. So we can apply an external load or we can stretch the specimen upto the limit such that the stress inside it should not exceed the yield limit for zero plastic deformation.

Please follow the step by step solution in the images attached.

A metal has a toughness of 748 MPa. Elastic deformation terminates at a strain of 0.010, and the material fractures at a total strain of 0.55. The modulus of resilience is 2.50MPa. Plastic deformation can be described by the equation sigma = K(epsilon)^n, where n is 0.18, and assume for this metal the equation is validto the point of fracture.
