Solutions

Expert Solution

The correct answer is cohesion. In simple words cohesion refers to the the attractive forces between the the similar particles. Similarly adhesion refers to the the attraction between the the dissimilar substance or particles. The rise in water level inside a capillary tube occurs due to two types of phenomenonal forces adhesion and cohesion. Adhesive forces between the glass molecules and water molecules cause the the water level to rise. The glass molecules attract the water molecules in contact leading to rise in the water level. In return the water molecules attract the the nearby water molecules by cohesive forces leading to to rise of water throughout the volume of tube. Thus the water molecules at the the boundary between the water volume and glass are under both adhesive and cohesive forces. But the molecule at the centre of the uh tube only experiences the cohesive force of the surrounding water molecules and gets attracted to cause rise in water level.
