An occupational illness is a chronic ailment caused by exposure - typically over a prolonged period - to workplace hazards or different work activities.it is hard to prevent because work is often difficult to spot and regulate.

Three types of occupational illness are categorised as-

1. Disease caused by agents--

A. Disease caused by chemical agents - ex lead poisoning , gas poisoning, pneumoconiosis.

B. Disease caused by physical agents -- ex are heat pyrexia , trench foot, occupational cataract, air embolism , occupational deafness, due to radiation cancer, leukemia, etc .

C . Disease caused by biological agents -- ex anthrax, actinomycosis, tetanus, fungal infections.

2. Disease by target organ -

A. Occupational respiratory disease - ex asthama

B. Occupational skin disease -- allergy and irritant dermatitis.

C. Occupational musculoskeletal disease-- ex painful disorders of muscles , tendons and nerves, carpel tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, tension neck syndrome.

3. Occupational cancer -- chimney sweeps carcinoma, mesothelioma , lymphoma, lung -liver cancer , skin cancer etc.

Some are mechanical occupational diseases are also , mainly cause accidents and injuries.
