The total estimated elephant population in 1979 was 1.3 million elephents .turn on the 2007range larger to see most of the animals counted were in protected areas A $7 million comprensive census of African elephants has found that the population decreased by nearly a third between 2007 and 2014 .The conclusion that the population declined by 144000 animals in just seven years .there are various factors involved in the decline of African elephants ,such as loss of habitated and conflict with humans ,however the overwhelming reason for the fall in population levels is poching as confirmed by reserchers of the great elephant census .
In 2020 with only 40000- 5000 left in the wild the species is classified as endangered and it is critical to conserved both african and asian elephants since they play such a vital role in their ecosystem as well as contributing towards tourism and community incomes in many areas.
