What are the advantages of including alternative proteins in meals? What are the disadvantages for young children?
There are many advantages of alternative proteins:
1. Source of complete proteins: Several plant proteins are complete proteins. The example of such plants are soy and chocho. Soy and chocho proteins contain all nine essential amino acids.
2. High fiber content: Plant based proteins contain high fibers which is good for health. For example a cup of cooked lentils, contain almost 16 grams fiber, which is almost half of the amount you require daily.
3. Acceptable flavors: Alternative proteins have natural flavor which can be easily incorporated into your diet.
4. Less fat and cholesterol content: Plant based diet contains less amount of fats and cholesterol which keeps you healthy.
5. In addition to above advantages, plant proteins are highly versatile and supports weight loss.
Although there are many advantages with alternative proteins, there are some disadvantages also. The most common disadvantages include lack of iron, zinc deficiency, lack of satiety and extreme less amount of cholesterol which directly affects the growth and development of young children.
