The focus for this live classroom is a discussion about diet therapy for a 58 year old woman who experienced her first MI and is being discharged home. She currently works full time and is divorced. She lives in an apartment and has no family in the surrounding community.
To prepare for the live classroom session and your written submission, use your chapter readings, review of videos, course materials, research, and written assignments.
Be prepared to discuss the following:
What should be the focus for her nutritional history and assessment?
What dietary recommendations should be made?
What obstacles to staying on the diet recommended might this woman encounter?
What special considerations should you, as a nurse, be aware of?
MI or Myocardial infection is commonly called as heart attack. It is the ceasation or decrease of blood flow to heart muscle.
Assess the nutrional status of the client to check out the total calorie needed for her.. Provide a heart healthy diet.
Limit saturated fats, Cholestrol and sodium
The follwing diet can be include
a meditarian diet which includes poultry than red meat, lots of whole grains, pasta, bread, plenty of fruits, vegetables,olive oil, oil rich fish, little wine or beer
a predominant vegetarian diet (all vegetables)
Fruits(rich in vitamins and minerals)
Avoid high satured foods like meat, pies,butter ,creams, hard cheese,cakes, biscuits,,foods containing coconut oil, palm oil
high unsaturated foods like herring, mackeral, solmon,sardine, rape seed .olive oil could be used
Reduce salt intake
The obstacles like going to work and age factor together contribute the women to face difficulties to follow the regimen and staying on it.
A nurse should specially consider about the calories needed , monitor the saturated and unsaturated fats, vitamins and minerals needed for a working women according to her age and life style.
