Organic and Medicinal Chemistry: The research area covers theoretical and practical studies aimed at obtaining and characterization of new organic compounds with potential biological activity (antiviral, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, among others), the synthesis / isolation and characterization of natural products the evaluation of possible biological activities of the synthesized or isolated compounds, as well as to improve the pharmacological profile of molecules known by structural changes, including semissíntese, with emphasis on stereoselective synthesis and / or dessimetrização, new synthetic routes, theoretical calculations for example, docking.

Some of the viral dieases cause cancer and caners are generally associated with inflammation. So the diseases are interelated. Human papilloma virus can cause HPV infections. Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus can cause liver cancers. Human Immunodeficiency Virus can cause kaposis sarcoma and cervical cancer. Herpes virus 8 also can cause cervical cancer. (1) So targetting cancers, viral infection and inflammation is an excellent approach in the identification of new drugs.
Plants are the best sources of drugs. More than 80% of the drugs are obtained or derived from plant sources (2). Nowadays crystal structure of various protein that are involved in various diseases are available. The phyotoconstituents like flavanoids, lipids, alkaloids etc from the plants can be docked on these proteins and the best molecules can identified. Further plants containing these phytoconstituents can be used for further studies.
The plant of interest can be selected by docking studies. Further extraction of the phytoconstituents can be done by various methods like water extraction, using organic solvents, microwave extraction, steam distillation etc.(2) These extracts can be tested for their biological activity and the extract that is active can be used for further studies.
The extracts that gave the best biological activity can be subjected for isolation using various techniques and can be characterized. the molecule that is responsible for pharmacological activity can be identified by this procedure. Further this molecule can derivitized and various derivatives can be synthesized to get the best molecule.
