1. Why iodoethane is preferred in Williamson et her synthesis over chloroethane ?
2. Write the balanced equation for reaction of acetaminophen with K 2 CO 3 .
3. You will wash your reaction mixture at the end of reaction with water and then with 5% aqueous NaOH. What you will remove from the reaction mixture by w ashing with (a) water, (b) aqueous NaOH
1). Why iodoethane is preferred in Williamson et her synthesis over chloroethane ?
Solution :- Cl is more electronegative than iodine therefore Cl is not good leaving group but compared to the Cl the iodine is good leaving group therefore it can favor more stater reaction. Hence the iodoethane is preferred over the chloroethane
2. Write the balanced equation for reaction of acetaminophen with K2CO3
Solution :- following is the balanced reaction equation.
2C8H9NO2 + K2CO3 ----------- > 2C8H8NO2K (aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
3. You will wash your reaction mixture at the end of reaction with water and then with 5% aqueous NaOH. What you will remove from the reaction mixture by w ashing with (a) water, (b) aqueous NaOH
Solution :- When we use water for the washing of the precipitate then it removes the any water soluble impurities present in the solid also it removes any traces of the acid or bases.
The use of NaOH is can be done to remove the excess acid remained in the product.
Therefore by washing with NaOH or water the purpose is to remove the impurities from the solid precipitate.
