  1. Do people find hairy spider more scary than non-hairy spiders? To find out, 20 people were randomly assigned to two groups of 10. One group viewed hairy spiders and the other group viewed a very similar, but non-hairy, spider. Each person was asked to rate the spider she or he viewed on a scariness scale from 1 to 10 (with 10 being the most scary). The results were as follows:

Hairy Non-hairy 51 73 84 85 95 96 96 96

10 7 10 8

Note that the data is not normally distributed and the two populations are not related. Perform an appropriate hypothesis test to answer the question.

Jerome read that in temperate climes, there are more than 133 spiders per square meter of open land with a standard deviation of 4. To test this, he fenced off 31 square meters and carefully counted all the spiders. He found an average of 134.22 spiders per square meter. Which of the following correctly describes the test and hypotheses he should use? A. A z-test with H0:μ≤133, Ha:μ>133 B. A t-test with H0:μ≥133, Ha:μ<133 C. A t-test with H0:μ≤133, Ha:μ>133...

Jeremy wants to know if some scary movies are more frightening than others. He takes a group of students and randomly assigns them to watch one of three popular scary movies (Jaws, Alien, or Psycho), and counts the number of times each person screams during the movie. Is there a significant difference in the number of screams when comparing these movies? Set α = .05.
