Choose a perceptual difference that demonstrates an
irregularity or dysfunction in one of the projection pathways.
Explain how it could affect everyday life.
Schizophrenia is a neurological disorder caused by the dysfunction of mesolimbic pathway. The mesolimbic pathway intends to transmit dopamine (a neurotransmitter) through the ventral tegmental area which is located in the midbrain to the ventral striatum. This pathway is associated with the reward giving cognition, an abnormal distribution of D2 receptors between the limbic region and the rest of the brain. The excess of these receptors in the limbic region contributes towards the over-stimulated thinking, hallucinations and an abnormal connection to the Wernickes area which can comprehend the languages but cannot produce it.
Affects:-
This can lead to the extreme social isolation. What such people say does not make sense.
This can lead to the major depressive disorder (MDD)
The inability to express on self is responsible to cause raised stress and cortisol levels which in long term might prove to be harmful.
Such type of people may find it difficult to stick to their current employment or even they can find it difficult to take care of themselves.
