L.H asks why his provider discontinued his spironolactone. How would you respond? Explain your answer. Two weeks later L.H is prescribed furosemide (Lasix).
What type of medication is furosemide and how does it work? What are the advantages of this classification of diuretics? Explain your answer.
. Abnormal electrolytes and other laboratory test results may occur when taking loop diuretics. Explain the imbalances. Would the following serum electrolyte and laboratory values be expected to increase, decrease or unchanged? SodiumPotassiumCalciumMagnesiumGlucoseUric acidCholesterol
What are the nursing considerations and teaching for patients taking loop diuretics?
Spironolactone is used to treat heart failure ,high blood pressure or hypokalemia.Spironolactone also treats fluid retention in the people with congestive heart failure or kidney disorder callaed nephrotic syndrome.
The most common side effects that occur with spironolactione includes hyperkalaemia and worsening renal function denoted by a raising creatinine.Because of this reason ,L.H provider may be disconinued his medicine.
Furosemide is used to treat oedema (fluid retention;excess fluid held in body tissues)caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidneyand liver disease .Furosemide is in class of medications called diuretics("water pills").
Furosemide works by blocking the absorption of sodium, chloride, and water from the filtered fluid in the kidney tubules, causing a profound increase in the output of urine (diuresis). The onset of action after oral administration is within one hour ,and the diuresis lasts 6-8 hours.Furosemide is used to reduce extra fluid in the body (edema).
The main advatage of this type of diuretics includes ,it reduce water retention in bodyand also it helps to lowering elevated blood pressure.
The main electrolyte imbalance that occur while taking loop diuretics includes Hypokalemia was present in 11%and hyperkalemia in 4%.All forms of dysnatremia and dyskalemia were more common in patients taking diuretics .Loop diuretics were an independent risk factor for hypernatremia and hypokalemia, this also affect to decrese calcium and magnesium concentrations. Uric acid serum glucose level will increase.Instruct the patient for routine blood test for electrolytes, renal and hepatic function, serum glucose, and uric acid levels throughout therapy.Instruct the patient for to monitor blood pressure and also increased eye pain or decreased visual activity.
