Compare and contrast the three types of coronaviruses: "SARS-Cov, MERS-Cov and Covid-2019" in regards to their replication cycle, transmission, R0

Solutions

Expert Solution

SARS-CoV-2 is the seventh member of the family of CoVs that infect humans. Four human CoVs (HCoV-229E, HCoV-NL63, HCoV-OC43 and HCoV-HKU1) are able to cause a wide range of upper respiratory tract infections (common cold), whereas SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV are responsible for atypical pneumonia. The causes of different infection sites are likely related to the presence of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the lower respiratory tract, which are the major human receptors for the surface spike (S) glycoprotein of MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV, respectively. The genetic sequence of SARS-CoV-2 is ≥70% similar to that SARS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 is capable of using the same cell entry receptor (ACE2) as SARS-CoV to infect humans,The novel CoV can be transmitted between humans via respiratory droplets. Notably, the respiratory tract is probably not the only route of transmission. Close contact is also a source of transmission of SARS-CoV-2. For example, SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted through direct or indirect contact with mucous membranes in the eyes, mouth or nose,interferon-alpha (IFNα) IFNα is a member of the family of type I IFNs that plays an important role in host resistance to viral infection. IFNα suppresses viral infection by directly interfering with replication of the virus and by promoting both innate and adaptive immune responses. In vitro experiments showed that IFNα effectively inhibits the replication of SARS-CoV,It has also been reported that cynomolgus monkeys are protected from infection with SARS CoV by treatment with IFNα ,Moreover, the therapeutic benefit of synthetic recombinant IFNα for patients with SARS was demonstrated in a pilot clinical trial . Thus, IFNα should be considered a candidate drug for COVID-19 therapy

Other coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV are known suppressors of Type I IFNs. Presumably, SARS-CoV-2 employs similar strategies. Explain how SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV may interfere with Type I IFN production and signaling through their receptors.

With all that you know about SARS-CoV-2 and Covid-19, discuss a possible evolutionary scenario for SARS-CoV-2 , over the next 6 months, 1 year and 5 years. How, if at all, will the virulence/trasmissability of SARS-CoV-2 change and why? A vaccine was developed for Polio, but, so far, not for HIV. Will science develop an effective vaccine against SARS-CoV-2? Why or why not?

The virus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads easily enough to have caused a global pandemic hard to contain so far. Effective containment needs to be informed by some key epidemiological factors. One such factor is called the “serial interval” and it represents the “duration between symptom onsets of successive cases in a transmission chain.” That is, if person A (infector) transmits the virus to person B (infectee), then the serial interval is the amount of time between...

Q1 The highly contagious novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 also called coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) is a global health emergency of unprecedented proportions. The ongoing loss of life globally as well as the virus’ ability to spread rapidly through communities, has generated a need for significant changes to the foundations of the well and least developed countries. In the last few months, political leaders globally have been making new announcements to respond to COVID-19 impacts, on both people and the economy....

People infected with SARS- CoV-2 (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19) can show an array of different symptoms and complications, ranging from mild to severe. Researchers are working to develop both prevention and treatment, including vaccines and antibody injections. Vaccines introduce antigens from viruses, without introducing the infectious virus itself. How/why do vaccines act as prevention rather than treatment? Be sure to talk about the types of cells and immune responses that vaccines are targeting, and why targeting these cells and...

COVID-19 is a disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. This coronavirus infection results in an acute respiratory infection that can lead to viral pneumonia and end-organ failure. CoV-2 is a RNA virus (single stranded RNA genome) that specifically targets cells in the lungs that express the ACE2 receptor. Answer the three related questions regarding a mucosal immune response to SARS-CoV-2: 1. Which antibody class would you expect to encounter CoV-2 and which T effector T cell would activate B cells? As the...
