hospital policy states that any nurse employed for the purposes o direct patient care may not involve the patients in research studies. which barrier to evidence-based practice related to this situation?
1. negative attitudes toward research
2. lack of institutional support for research
3.findings are not ready for use in practice
4. inadequate dissemination of findings.
Evidence Based Practice (EBP) : EBP in nursing is a process of locating , appraising, and applying the best evidence from the nursing and medical literature to improve the quality of clinical nursing practices.
here , answer is,
2. Lack of institutional support for nurses.
The clinic or hospital support to spend time on EBP in nursing are limited for nurses. There is a lack of professional ability to critically appraise research. Physician's dominance in clinical practice, thus nurses are not given autonomy to implement newer, better clinical evidences in practice. Lack of support from professional colleagues and organizations, and lack of confidence and and authority in research arena. The lack of administrative support and incentives for implimentation of EBP practices.
Negative attitude towards research : Change always face resistance and the same is applied to EBP aswell. This is more pertinent in this case because of reluctance to believe results of research study over safe, traditional practices and cost effectiveness of new practices. Also the bedside nurses do not have the will to impliment change regardless of the benifits to patient care. Lack of initiative among nursing leaders and managers to create the environment of EBP practices.
Findings are not ready for use in practice & Inadequate dissemination of findings : The available scientific evidences are variable based not on a complete practice and limited or absent ecological validity of these evidences (dissonance between experimental/ controlled setting and clinical environment). Lack of continuing education programme for nurses, especially for bedside nurses. Thus, the evidences are not reaching to nursing users.
