Explain the difference between weak-field and strong-field metal complexes.
(around 200 words please)
strong field metal complexes means complees with low spin ligands, and weak field omplexes means complexes with high spin ligands. High spin and low spin are two possible classifications of spin states that occur in coordination compounds. this classification is mainly due to energy differences between the orbitals for each respective geometry, whihc is xplained by liganad field theory or crystal field theory, which accounts for the breaking of degenerate orbital states.
when placing electrons in orbitals, electrons are represented by arrows. an arrow pointing up represents a spin of +1/2 and an arrow pointing down represents a spin of -1/2. electrons in different signly occupied orbitals of same sub shell have the same spins.
in high spin complexes, all the electrons first arranged in one direction, then pairing of electrons will start. in low spin complexes, electrons get arranged with pairing. ligand field theory will explains the splitting of orbitals and energy of orbitals in squareplanar, octahedral and tetrahedral geometries.
