Explain the relationship between ovary and fruit

Solutions

Expert Solution

Fruits are the fleshy or dry ripened ovary of the flowering plants, having the seed or seeds inside. Thus, apricots, grapes and bananas, as well as bean pods, corn grains, cucumbers, tomatoes, and almonds, are all technically fruits. However, this is restricted to the ripened ovaries which is sweet and either pulpy or succulent.

Botanically, a fruits are matured ovaries and its associated parts. They contains seeds, which have developed from the enclosed ovule after fertilization, even though development of fruit without fertilization, called parthenocarpy, is known, for eg. bananas. Fertilization induces numerous changes in the flower: anthers and stigma wither, petals drop off, and the sepals may sheded or undergo some modifications; the ovary enlarged, and the ovules develop into seeds, each containing an embryo plant. The main purpose of the making fruit is the protection and dissemination of the seeds.
