1. Kwashiorkaor is a form of malnutrition caused by lack of protein in diet. It is also known as ' edematous malnutrition' because of it's association with edematous( fluid retention).
2. Doctor first will examine the suspected patient for an enlarged liver(hepatomegaly) and swelling.
Blood and urine test to measure the level of protein and sugar.
Other tests may be performed on blood and urine to look for muscle breakdown and assess kidney function, overall health and growth. These test includes arterial blood gas, blood urea nitrogen(BUN), blood levels of creatinine, blood levels of potassium, urnalysis and complete blood count (CBC).
3. People who have kwashiorkaor typically have an extremely emaciated appearance in all body parts except their ankles, feet, and belly which swell with fluid.
4. Kwashiorkaor can be corrected by eating more protein and more calories overall especially if treatment is started earlier.
First should be give more calories in the form of carbohydrates, sugars, fats. Once these calories provide energy, then provide food with more protein. Administration of long term vitamin and mineral supplementation is necessary.
5. Children and older adults, the two groups who most commonly experience kwashiorkaor as a result of abuse or neglect, will display typical symptoms of the condition. The most visible symptoms are swelling of the ankles, feet and belly. In some cases these symptoms may also accompany other signs of mistreatment, such as brushing and broken bones.
