While we are still far from “Transcendence” -style artificial intelligence — like uploading human consciousness to software programs, at the rate we are going in technological innovations and in terms of the convergence between our noted three worlds ( the physical world, the virtual or digital world, and our very own intellectual world “inside our brain”), we could someday digitize the human brain, and reproduce cognitive intelligence and emotions, machines and computers that can totally replace human insight.
What are the pros and cons of this technological evolution and what kind of implications would this have on an individual and our society as whole?
The idea of machine capable of expressing human emotion is seems to be becoming more and more realistic as technology progress. There are various fiction movies that explore these subjects in depth, while the imagination is vast there are pro and cons of this kind of evolution as we already seen in movies. Let’s talk about some pro of this kind of technological evolution.
Advance in A.I can lead to many fruitful results, like advance healthcare, cure to rare diseases, building a society and culture involving technology will sure enhance the living standard of people as they get more life expectancy, and better ways to live their life. Imaging a future where robots are able to interact with humans with same level of compassion sounds interesting but there are always two sides of the story on one hand where we can use this evolution to our advantage in various fields there are some terrifying disadvantage of it too.
When machines are given their own will then come the question of independence and their rights since they are able to express themselves they will no longer bound to be enslaves, they would require their own identity. As we seen from various fiction what happens when machine or A.I takes over or refuses to have a master, it is a complete disaster; a chaos, war between machine and men, there are various consequences. Letting aside the fiction, when we live in a society where machine are capable as humans or even better than them, people would prefer machine as they are robust and expendables, which means less jobs and more poverty for the middle class or poor.
People will always be afraid of what they don’t understand, and introducing machines of that impact will definitely imbalances the balance of society. As more technological advancement are under progress there rise a question what if they are used for a far worse than mean like war.
It is still way ahead of time but companies introducing robots like Sophia and self-driven cars, may leave you in wonder what will happen in the coming years as technology progress.
