A low secretion of luteninizing hormone LH in the normal male adult would cause A. excessive beard growth B. increased spermatogenesis C. decreased testosterone secretion D. shrinkage of the anterior pituitary gland
Answer: (c) decreased testosterone secretion
Reason: Testosterone is responsible for spermatogenesis and male fertility and also for development of secondary sexual characters-facial hair, male voice, pubic hair, libido etc
Hypothalamic GnRH secretion, stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to produce LH and FSH. LH acts on the Leydig's cells of testes to produce testosterone.Although for normal sperm production, contribution of both LH and FSH is required, but crucial role is played by LH, as testosterone is essential for development of primary sex organs and sperm production. FSH acts on Sertoli cells which helps in sperm maturation and nutrition.
A lowering of LH production will lead to lowering of testosterone production, which will adversely effect spermatogenesis and also will lead to decrease in facial hair growth.Shrinking of pituitary, is usually caused due to ageing or tumours and has nothing to do with LH production.
