A. hypoglycemia
B. hypercalcemia
C. hyperkalemia
D. increased Metabolic Rate & weight loss
E. hypokalemia
If a patient has higher than normal levels of Parathyroid Hormone (PTH), you would expect to see:
Parathyroid gland is a pea shaped gland, located on the thyroid gland.
It releases parathyroid hormone which solely maintain calcium level in blood, when calcium level high in blood it stops its secretion and when calcium level low in blood it releases PTH to maintain stasis of it.
A. hypoglycemia- this would see in advanced stages, the expected lab value will focus on calcium level, for confirmation of hyperparathyroidism.
B. hypercalcemia- it is an increase level of calcium in blood, cause bone weakness and kidney stone. It occurs due to increase level of parathyroid hormone or overactivity of parathyroid hormone. Hypercalcemia is expected when PTH increases above than the normal.
C. hyperkalemia- it usually occurs after removal of parathyroid gland, but increase level doesn’t cause hyperkalemia.
D. increased Metabolic Rate & weight loss- it is seen in the advance stage of the hyperparathyroidism, in primary hyperparathyroidism only calcium level and associated symptoms would be assessing.
E. hypokalemia- increase level of parathyroid hormone, leads to imbalance of calcium in the blood i.e. hypercalcemia. Increase level of calcium can cause hypokalemia. And it usually seen after removal of parathyroid gland.
Hence, option B is a correct rest are incorrect.
