WHAT IS MEANT BY FOOD HYGEINE? Food hygeine is a practice of proper PREPARATION, WASHING, COOKING, STORING and PRESERVATION of foods to prevent from CROSS CONTAMINATION and from SPREADING OF BACTERIA. For instance, FOOD POISONING. IMPORTANCE OF FOOD HYGIENE: School students are more prone to get infection from contaminated foods and it is necessary for them to educate with certain things to do to ensure a good hygienic practice. 1. Food hygiene and safety- prevent germs from multiplying in foods and reaching at dangerous levels. 2. It ensures daily healthy family living. 3. It also helps to prevent from wasting of money on drugs and from medical check-up. 4. should explain about minimal spread of micro-organisms due to safety practices. 5. should explain about the reduction in risk of food poisoning 6. hand washing- minimize and prevent the spread of bacteria. 7. should explain about the proper food hygiene to keep insects and rodents out of the entire house(Eg: kitchen) HOW TO PRACTICE FOOD HYGIENE: - PRACTICE PERSONAL HYGIENE: should explain to students about the importance of washing hands with soap and waterbefore handling with foods. - REFRIGERATES FOOD THAT CAN EASILY BE DESTROYED BY HEAT: should explain about the foods that need to be chilled in the refrigerator to preserve them longer and to keep away from harmful organisms growing on them. Foods like meat,fish green leafy vegetables - RAW FOODS SHOULD KEPT SEPARATE FROM DRIED OR COOKED FOODS:should be kept in separate storage units. -WASH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES WITH SALT OR VINEGAR: should adviced students to wash fruits and vegetables with water, salt or vinegar before storing them in the refrigerator. - KEEP INSECTS AND PESTS AWAY FROM FOOD AREAS: because they carry pathogens from one surface to another which can lead to food borne illness. So it is important for school students to be aware of pests and insects from spreading of diseases. - CLEAN WATER FOR DRINKING AND FOOD PREPARATION: important to use clean water to drink and preparation to ensure healthy lifestyle.
