Select the case that most fully and accurately describes an accelerating mass.

I. It moves in a straight line at constant speed.

I I. It moves in a circle at a constant speed.

III. It free falls with insignificant atmospheric friction.

Solutions

Expert Solution

the case which fully and most accurately describes the accelerating mass : "It free falls with insignificant atmospheric friction ".

It is so because the mass which is in free fall motion , it moves under the influence of acceleration due to gravity , Thus it keeps on acceleration with an acceleration equal to the acceleration due to gravity which has a value = 9.8 m/s^2 ( near the surface of the Earth).

It must be noted that the mass which is moving at a constant speed in a circle is also accelerating with the influence of centripetal force and acceleration in that case is known as centripetal acceleartion whose value can be calculated with the formula : V^2/R

where V is the constant speed with which the mass is moving in the circle and R is the radius of the circle.
