Therapeutic use of self. Therapeutic use of self means; A health care provider's use of verbal and non-verbal communication,emotional exchange and the activities of a nurse to build a therapeutic relationships with the patient that promotes co-operation and healing. The therapeutic use of nursing is a central focus of nursing. Which is a nurse should aware of his or her own thoughts, feelings and actions. This technique is employed by occupational therapists to engage clients inorder to produce meaningful participation and to get better outcome.

The application of therapeutic use of self can takes place by 6 modes. Advocating mode, collaborating mode ,emphathising mode, encouraging mode, instructing mode and problem solving mode. In advocating mode the therapist assist the client in accessing information and other resources. In collaborating mode, therapists focus the client's principles and involves them in all decisions. And in empathising mode, therapist makes every effort to fully understand clients experience.

The therapists apply the therapeutic use of self by encouraging the clients performance in encouraging mode. In instructing mode therapist takes a teacher like role by educating the client. In problem solving mode,the therapists depends on logical reasoning in their approach to client. Therapeutic use of self is very essential to build an effective therapeutic relationships.Also in nursing this technique will helps in many ways like information gathering, assessment,handling difficult situations etc.
