How many kilograms of 0°C ice needs to be added to 4 kg of 80°C tea to change the temperature to 10°C? Assume tea has the same specific heat as water.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Heat lost by hot tea=mcT

m=mass of tea=4kg

c=specific heat =4184

T=fall in temperature=80-10=70C

Heat lost by hot tea=mcT=4x4184x70=1.172xJ

Heat gained by ice=mL+mcT=m(L+cT)

m=mass of ice=?

L=latent heat of ice=3.336x

c=4184

T=rise in temperature=10-0=10C

Heat gained by ice=m(L+cT)=m[3.336x+(4184x10)]=3.754xm

Heat lost by hot tea=Heat gained by ice

1.172x=3.754xm

m=1.172x/3.754x=3.12kg=mass of ice
