The same day, another patient arrives at the ER also needing a blood transfusion. The patient has type 0- blood. What are all possible blood types this person can receive? Again, include concepts of blood typing and donor/recipient info to justify your answer. Finally, why are people with type 0- blood medically important?
Answer
a) The only pssible blood type the patient with
O- blood can receive is : O-
- If any other blood type is transfused to the patient with O-
blood, the antibodies in the patient's plasma will detect the
antigens in donor's blood as foreign antigens.
- The antibodies will attack newly transfused red blood
cells.
- This will lead to agglutination reaction, clumping and
destruction of red blood cells.
b) The people with type O- blood medically important because, they can donate blood to persons with all other blood types.
