One of the myths about female athletes and strength training is that they need a different training program. Research has shown, however, that while female athletes may not develop as much muscle because they produce smaller amounts of testosterone, female athletes have much to gain by participating in strength training. What factors discourage female athletes from participating fully in strength training? How do female athletes benefit from strength training?
The following are the factors that discourage the female athletes from participating fully in strength training:
1)Misconception regarding gaining of unattract bulky muscles:
This is not true as during strength training,the persons lose body fat and gains lean muscle instead.So, it is balancing out. Only a few women with underlying genetic changes or who are prone for hypertrophy gains large muscles.
2)Gender gap:
It is ingrained in many of our minds that strength training is only for males.Females have less strength to opt for strength training.However, it is not true as strength training is not just for building muscles instead, it has a lot of benefits alongside it.
3)Lack of awareness:
Many young female athletes are not aware of strength training and its benefits and also perceive it as something only males could do.

Strength training reduces the risk of injuries:
An athlete faces more injuries than non athletes, strength training makes the body flexible and strong to withstand these injuries.
Strength training improves both physical and mental health:
Strength training helps in burning a lot of calories thereby decreasing the excess fat which is a risk factor for many diseases. Also,it keeps your body in shape.So, all these factors contribute to self confidence which is essential for every individual including female athletes.
Many resources says, strength training or any physical exercise releases endorphins which enchances mood. So, being in a good mental state is essential for female athletes to focus on their game.
Apart from improving core strength and being fit, it also reduces high estrogen levels in the body that is thought to be responsible for breast cancer.
