"Describe the discourse regarding COVID-19 and it's effect on the US population. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? How soon do experts (and politicians) believe we can return to "a semblance of normality?"

  • A person can be an asymptomatic carrier or may develop frank acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis.
  • Though it affects everyone, the case fatality is not the same across all age groups.
  • It children, adolescents, and young adults can get infected by usually recover.
  • However, the elderly, those with comorbidities like ischemic heart disease, hypertension are the develop a critical version of the disease.
  • Most of the deaths are seen in these patients.
  • The virus is shed by the patient 1 day before becoming symptomatic and can continue to spread it for 37 days.
  • The virus is found in blood, sputum, urine, and feces as well.
  • There is no effective treatment available. Current drugs like chloroquine and tocilizumab are being tried.
  • However, the evidence supporting their utility is not robust.
  • Plus, we don't have a vaccine as of yet (the human trial have started but this will take some time)
  • As scientists and researchers working hard to find a cure or vaccine, the virus keeps on spreading.
  • With no medicine/ vaccine to rescue us, we are left with very basic tools for preventing the spread of the disease.
  • These basic tools are 1) handwashing 2) cough hygiene 3) avoiding crowded arises and 4) a lockdown.
  • These measures may be basic but that is all we have got at the movement.
  • These low tech measures have shown their efficacy in slowing down the spread in many countries.
  • Therefore, if we strictly adhere to the self-isolation norms we can slow down the spread of the disease.
  • It difficult to control the air one breaths. Therefore, it is going to take some time before things come back to normal
  • It is time for us to protect our elderly and those with chronic diseases.
  • Large scale testing for COVID -19 is going to help us find those asymptomatic carriers.
  • It is important to isolate these asymptomatic carriers from the community as they are unknowingly propagating the disease.
  • These measures in certain situations may curtail human rights ( especially the right to choose).
  • This is bound to create a sense of insecurity in the minds of the people of a free nation.
  • However, we all must look at the larger good and try to be helpful in whatever way possible.
  • The big problem for health care workers is the lack of personal protective equipment.
  • It is difficult for doctors and nurses to function without them. Plus it is unethical to expect them to work without them
  • Many of them belong to the susceptible group.
  • Government and private organizations should provide these doctors, nurses, and the helpers in the hospital with PPE.
  • It is important that the medical staff works in batch and not all of them are employed at the same time.
  • If all work at the same time, after some time they need to be kept in quarantine. This will curtail the workforce. When the coronavirus is at its peak, we cannot afford to this problem.
  • There is always light at the end of the tunnel, but this is going to a long tunnel. it is going to test us to the point to a physical and mental breakdown.
  • However, we must remember we have humankind have seen and slayed many such diseases in the past. This is virus is our new adversary.
  • If we as humans come together and joining forces, we can definitely rise victorious.
