Excess HCl (aq) was added to 0.5549 grams of a divalent metal. The gas generated displaced water from a starting volume of 525.0 mL down to 311.0 mL. The temperature and pressure in the laboratory were 24.2 degrees Celsius and 753.1 torr respectively. What is the identity of the divalent metal? (The vapor pressure of water at 24.2 degrees Celsius is 17.8 torr)

Solutions

Expert Solution

The gas generated displaced water from a starting volume of 525.0 mL down to 311.0 mL

The volume of H2 gas = 525-311   = 214ml

V = 214ml = 0.214ml

PT   = 753.1torr

PH2 = PT-PH2O

          = 753.1-17.8   = 735.3torr

          = 735.3/760   = 0.9675atm

T    = 24.2+273   = 297.2K

PV = nRT

n   = PV/RT

     = 0.9675*0.214/0.0821*297.2

     = 0.008485moles

M + 2HCl(aq) -----------> MCl2(aq) + H2

1 mole of H2 produced from 1 mole of metal

0.008485 moles of H2 produced from = 1*0.008485/1   = 0.008485 moles of metal

gram atomic mass of metal   = mass of metal/no of moles

                                                 = 0.5549/0.008485   = 65.4g/mole

The divalent metal is zinc ( Zn)
