Imagine yourself as an average woman in a poor country, such as Bangladesh or El Salvador or Nigeria or other similar place--do a little research if necessary (from the assigned readings or quick internet search). What economic activities do you engage in during your average day? What is the quality of your life, and according to what measures? What do you need--from your personal perspectives as this woman--to improve your life, if that is what you desire?
The women of Bangladesh spend eight hours on an average per day doing unpaid work, while their male counterparts spend only 90 minutes in such activities, according to a recent research.
The study also found women spending around one hour in paid work, whereas men spend more than five hours a day for paid work.
The findings of the study were revealed on Saturday at a photo exhibition organised by ActionAid Bangladesh titled “Different images of men” at the Drik Gallery in Dhaka.
ActionAid conducted the research using “the time diary method” and interviewed around 600 participants of AAB POWER project in Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts.
Research Initiatives Bangladesh (RIB) Executive Director Meghna Guhathakurta presented the research findings in the programmme.
Meghna said the patterns indicate that women were found to be contributing in more productive work (3.24 hrs) than men, without getting paid.
Besides, working hours of women in unpaid tasks are much higher than that of men, forcing the women to carry additional burden on women
The quality of women lives in Bangladesh is very poor and pathetic as they are working harder than men and still not getting paid.
Measures to be taken
A)The Bangladesh govt should ensure that women works only 8 hours a day and should be given adequate wages for their work.
B)The govt should give same status to women as they give to men
C)Various women motivational workshops and seminars should be conducted for the welfare of the women
D)A board should be set up to seek the redressals of women
