Communication is very important in the field of social work as effective communication is essential in order to obtain and convey information to clients and without which, is very difficult to do so. One of the important skills that a social worker must possess is listening skills. This is because a social worker will engage in counseling and the key to effective counselling is being able to listen patiently and careful to hat the clients says and also to avoid other gestures such as looking disinterested, yawning when the client speaks, having judgmental expressions. Another role of social worker is to get information from the client. In many instances, the client may be hesitant to share information or reluctant to do so. Thus the social worker must build trust with the client and must know how to ask the right question and to alter the language in order to obtain as much information as possible. Since the profession of social workers involves interacting with people, they must learn how to control their non-verbal behaviors during communication. This involves smiling, maintaining eye contact and making the client feel as comfortable as possible within the presence of the social worker. Thus effective communication is very essential as social workers mainly deal with interactions with various individuals.
