In the assigned readings and videos, the Heritage Foundation and Peter Sagal seem at odds in their respective positions toward the 14th Amendment and the evolution of equal protection. How do you reconcile equality versus equity in public education today? You must support your position with examples from case law, the U.S. Constitution, or other readings. In the assigned readings and videos, the Heritage Foundation and Peter Sagal seem at odds in their respective positions toward the 14th Amendment and the evolution of equal protection. Equality in education focusses on giving everyone equal input and expecting them to work with it to achieve excellence. Equity, on the other hand, focusses exclusively on the outcome and doesn't mind flexing the input to suit needs.
For example,
Equality is when children coming under parents of specific income group get a subsidy for getting a uniform required at a school in order to participate in a band activity.
Equity is when the same child is given access to band lessons
that other children might be getting as part of their community
programme. The child needs to be able to play an instrument in
order to be in a band - which will eventually require a
uniform.
How do you reconcile equality versus equity in public
education today?
Both equality and equity focus on inclusion of all children in education to ensure that they excel in studies which will further help them have a safe future that helps them handle their needs. Factors like income, community, race, culture, and ability are deciding factors of equity. In spite of being an equal opportunity educator, it is important to be an educator who offers equity. This ensures that more children are motivated to complete education and move onto higher areas of expertise. This affects the nation as a whole and not just the children who drop out.
There have been many reforms by the Department of Education in the form of grants. Local Education Agencies have been given financial assistance to support children from low-income households to succeed at school. Similar initiatives by the Federal government include IDEA, Promise Neighborhoods, and funding for faith-based organizations towards education.
The reconciliation involves identifying the thin line between equality and equity. For example, If student A is late to class because he was having fun with his friends at the cafeteria and student B was late to class because he had to drop off his younger sister at daycare - do both deserve detention? They don't. This is where student A might feel unfair treatment when student B is excused. Student A deserves detention and this should be made clear. This could be applied to performance and cognitive capabilities. Bridging the gap between the two is a challenge that will help reconcile both.
