Imagine a situation that you are on an island in the middle of a sea . The island is of around 10km long and put one transmitting antenna at one end of the island and another receiving antenna at the other island. The island has no man-made infrastructure but has trees, plants and animals. List the types of attenuation that the transmission signals will suffer and explain why?
Attenuation: The impairment is caused by the strength of signals that degrades with distance over a transmission link. Three factors are related to the attenuation:
•The received signal should have sufficient strength to be intelligently interpreted by a receiver. An amplifier or a repeater is needed to boost the strength of the signal.
•A signal should be maintained at a level higher than the noise so that error will not be generated. Again, an amplifier or a repeater can be used.
•Attenuation is an increasing function of frequency, with more attenuation at a higher frequency than at lower frequency. An equalizer can smooth out the effect of attenuation across frequency bands, and an amplifier can amplify high frequencies more than low frequencies.
Noise
Additional noise on N/Ws (networks) such as RFs (radio frequencies), leakage in wires, electrical currents can interfere by the signal to cause this. If the noise is more, then this will be more.
Travel Distance
When the transmission in a cable travels for long distances like from source (current place) to destination (connection supplier), then it experiences more noise while travelling.
Physical Environs
Physical environs which include installation of improper wiring, wall barriers, the temperature can alter the transmission, then attenuation can be caused.
Transmission Medium
An electromagnetic field can occur around the transmission once all the signals broadcasted down, then energy losses will occur in the downside of the cable based on the length & frequency of the cable.
Environmental
This kind of attenuation relates to loss of signal power because of the transmission medium, whether that can be connected to copper wire, fiber optic or wireless.
