The Government of Mauritius, through the Smart City Scheme from
the Economic Development Board (EDB), is offering a plethora of
opportunities to global investors to share in the vision of
Mauritius in creating intelligent, innovative and sustainable
cities of tomorrow.
One IT concept critical to the implementation of smart cities is
what we refer to as the "Internet of Things", commonly known as
IoT.
a) Explain, using a relevant diagram, what is IoT?
b) List and explain two benefits that IoT will bring to smart
cities in Mauritius.
c) List and explain two limitations of IoT.
d) Will smart cities be a success in Mauritius and will it achieve
its main goals? Discuss
a)IoT (Internet of Things) is a
network of several devices, these devices includes several sensors
and are also connected to the internet and they can communicate
with each other by exchanging information. IoT emerged because of
integrtation of various fields like Wireless Sensor Networks,
Embedded Systems, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, 5G
Communications and MEMS (Micro electo mechanical devices).
b) Smart Homes - For effective utilization of electrical equipments, the lights/fans/AC's will be ONN/OFF depending on the number of persons available in a room, thus ensuring optimal energy utilization.
Electronic Toll Collection - Which automatically collects toll when the vehicle pass the toll gate, there by saving the time and man power.
c) Privacy and Security Issues - As the data is available freely due to the advent of IoT, the data may get in to the hands of wrong persons easily. The IoT devices should ensure confidentiality and Integrity.
Compatability / Standard - There is no universal standard available for implementing IoT in the real time, hence the IoT developed in India may not be compatable with US/Russia.
d)The Smart City project in Mauritius will be successfull because,
It will attract investors across the globe.
it will improve the job opportunity
It will improve the standard of living.
It will ensure development and conservation of natural and man made resources
It will provide affordable housing units for middle income earners.
The resedential / leisure and commercial buildings will be properly planned and constructed at different places
There will be many social programs depending of taste of different groups of citizens.
Availability of public transportation at affordable prices.
Availabilty of School / Hospitals in the locality.
Artificial Intelligent powered CCTV Cameras will be implanted on the roads/pathways to ensure safety.
