Yes. Disaster planning and nursing process has some similarities.
Let us see what is mean by nursing process. It is a series of steps that follow a logical sequence. The term nursing process is widely accepted to designate a series of steps that the nurse takes in planning and giving nursing care.
Definition: It is defined as a systematic problem solving approach for giving comprehensive nursing care.
There are 5 stages:
1.assessment
2.diagnosis
3.planning
4.implementation
5.evaluation
Now let us see what is disaster planning in nursing.
The terms emergency and disasters often used interchangeably. Emergencies are usually small scale, localized incidents which are resolved quickly using local resources. However, small scale emergencies can escalate into disasters when there has been inadequate planning and wasteful use of resources.
There are 4 phases of management.
Mitigation , preparedness, response, and recovery. It goes as a cycle.
We know that in both cases nurse has to assess the patient/ the situation.
Then diagnose . Where she should be aware of the needs of the patient.
Then the priorities are classified. We know that during disasters nurses classify the patients into the groups like
emergent
Urgent
Non urgent
Known as the triage system. In this triage system involves a brief client assessment to classify patients according to their needs for care.
The next step is implementation of plans. Which is also same for both nursing process and disaster management.
And the final step of nursing process is evaluation., where the nurses are evaluating the outcome.
In disaster planning the last phase is recovery phase, which encompasses action taken to return to a normal situation after the disaster.
To conclude this topic, nursing process and disaster planning has some similarities.
