Research indicates that people who volunteer to participate in research studies tend to be natives of the general area more than non-volunteers. To test this phenomenon, a researcher obtained a sample of 275 Pierce college students. The students were given a description of a psychological research study and asked whether they would volunteer to participate. The researcher also asked where they were from. Use a χ² square to determine if there is a significant relationship between being local and volunteering. Use an alpha (Type 1 error rate) = .05.

a.What are the null hypothesis and alternative hypotheses?
b.Create a table for expected scores.
c.Compute χ² and report both the critical value and whether the p-value is greater or less than alpha.
d.Based on these data, should you reject the null hypothesis? Why or why not?
e.Based on your results, what would you conclude about the research question? Use everyday, non-technical language.
a).hypothesis:-
being local and volunteering are independent.
being local and volunteering are nor independent.
b).the expected scores table:-
Los Angeles | out of area | |
volunteer | (200*200)/275 = 145.4545 | (75*200)/275 = 54.5455 |
Non-volunteer | (200*75)/275 = 54.5455 | (75*75)/275 = 20.4545 |
c).the test statistic be:-
df = (2-1)*(2-1) = 1
chi square critical value for alpha=0.05,df=1 be:-
the p value is = 0.1670 is greater than alpha.
[ in any blank cell of excel type =CHISQ.DIST.RT(1.9097,1) ]
d).decision:-
p value = 0.1670 > 0.05 (alpha)
so, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
e).conclusion:-
there is not enough evidence to conclude that there is a significant relationship between being local and volunteering .
