Below are the steps to construct an 85% confidence interval for the proportion of all residents in the state that favour a pro-nuclear energy policy.

Step1. Open Minitab

Step2. Open the 1 Proportion dialog box

  • Statistics > Basic Statistics > 1 Proportion

Step3. From the drop-down list, select variable name as EnergyView

Step4. Click on Options button, change confidence level = 85% and method = Normal approximation

Step5. Click on OK.

Below are the results:

Test and CI for One Proportion: EnergyView

Method

Event: EnergyView = Nuclear

p: proportion where EnergyView = Nuclear

Normal approximation method is used for this analysis.

Null hypothesis

H₀: p = 0.5

Alternative hypothesis

H₁: p ≠ 0.5

Interpretation of Results:

The null hypothesis states that the proportion of residents that favour a pro-nuclear energy policy equals 0.5.

And the sample proportion = 0.393035

85% CI for proportion = (0.343442, 0.442628)
